Corfu, Saratoga Special stakes-record holder, sires first foal

Bridlewood Farm’s Corfu, the Saratoga Special S. (G2) record holder by Malibu Moon, sired his first foal on Jan. 31st when a filly was born at Green Key Farm in Sparr, Florida.

Bred by Joan Wieneke, the bay filly is the first foal out of the Repent mare Chandeleur.

“She’s a nice, leggy, good-sized filly for a first foal,” said Wieneke. “We’re very pleased.”

Corfu was a leading 2-year-old both in the sales ring and on the racetrack. The handsome son of leading sire Malibu Moon topped the 2013 Barretts March Select Sale for 2-year-olds in training earlier in the year, commanding $675,000 from Demi O’Byrne after breezing a quarter of a mile in :20 4/5 seconds.

Trained by Todd Pletcher, Corfu impressively broke his maiden at Saratoga at first asking in July of his 2-year-old season, before coming back just 17 days later to win the Saratoga Special S. (G2) wire to wire in a dazzling 1:15.57, setting a new stakes record in the 6 ½-furlong event that still stands. The speedy Corfu was also runner-up in the Futurity S. (G2) at Belmont as a 2-year-old, and he earned $214,200 on the track before retiring to Bridlewood.

Corfu is out of the Forest Wildcat mare Fashion Cat, a half-sister to the three-time Grade 1-winning and $3 million-earning Florida-bred, Peace Rules. He is standing his second season at Bridlewood for a fee of $3,500 stands and nurses.
