Remember Willy launched a huge bid in the final quarter mile to take the July 4 Cup (G1) for 3-year-olds at Camarero Race Track in Puerto Rico on Independence Day.
For J P’s Gusto, Remember Willy marks his first Grade 1 winner. A top-five Third-Crop Sire this year in Florida, J P’s Gusto has better than 50% winners from starters.
Remember Willy was last for the first seven furlongs of the 1 3/16-mile contest, then accelerated remarkably quickly, cutting the corner at the top of the stretch and drawing off for a four-length win in a driving rainstorm.
The winner was bred in Florida by Phil and Karen Matthews and is out of from behind, whose siblings include Hillsborough S. (G3) winner Rizzi Girl and Papi Chullo, a stakes winner of nearly $400,000.
